About New Mexico

New Mexico has a long and varied history that dates back to the earliest days of human habitation in the region. The earliest known inhabitants of the area were the Clovis people, who lived in the area around 11,000 years ago. They were followed by the Folsom people, who lived in the area around 8,000 years ago. The first Europeans to explore the area were Spanish conquistadors, led by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1540. Coronado and his men explored the area in search of the mythical Seven Cities of Gold, but found only Native American villages. In 1598, the Spanish established the first permanent settlement in New Mexico, at San Juan de los Caballeros. This settlement was the first of many Spanish settlements in the area, and the Spanish would remain in control of the region until 1821, when Mexico declared its independence from Spain. In 1848, the United States acquired New Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. The U.S. government established the New Mexico Territory in 1850, and it became a state in 1912. Since then, New Mexico has become known for its diverse culture, its unique cuisine, and its stunning landscapes. It is home to a number of national parks, monuments, and other protected areas, and is a popular destination for tourists from around the world.
